About the opera
- Run time: 2hrs 45min, 1 intermission
- Sung in: Italian
- Subtitles: English, Italian
- Venice Opera House: Teatro La Fenice
Verdi’s retelling of Shakespeare’s towering tragedy is a powerful drama of uncontrolled human emotion at its most extreme. The composer devoted enormous energy to writing, revising, and polishing what some experts consider his greatest opera. Otello includes one of the most demanding tenor parts in the entire opera repertoire, although few arias. Instead, Verdi uses deeply expressive orchestral writing to create near-continuous music.
